Greg Laden has a blog. Called Greg Laden’s Blog, it is where Greg posts about science and other things. When Greg writes about science he can be trusted to approach his subject scientifically, with scientific rigor.
However, when he writes about politics he forgets all about scientific rigor. He becomes emotional, strident. Critical thinking goes out the window, and any calumny that fits his narrative becomes gospel truth. If you are on Barack Obama’s side you can do no wrong. If you oppose Obama’s policies you become filth suited only for derision.
Check out Greg’s blog and read a few of his posts on the accusations against ACORN, and the doings of the Tea Party movement. According to Mr. Laden the charges against ACORN just can’t be true, while the Tea Party people are universally vile bastards out to bring back the old days of segregation and poll taxes. And ask him to investigate either ACORN or the TPM? He’d sooner do a serious study of the sasquatch.
When he’s not being a doctrinaire leftist Greg is a decent fellow, and a good science blogger. Unfortunately, I’m getting the feeling he’s sold his science for membership in the league of true believers. Sorry Greg, but you have become like unto the creationist, reviling evidence that disagrees with your doctrine. I have to ask, why is science forbidden when it comes to discussing politics?
On ACORN, the TPM, and the MSM I think Bob Dylan said it best back in the early 60s
Come writers and critics who prophesy with your pen
And keep your eyes wide, the chance won’t come again
And don’t speak to soon for the wheel still it spins
And there’s no tellin’ who that it’s namin’
For the loser now will be later to win
For the times they are a changin’.

Not a fan of Greg Laden at all (as I have seen that he blurs his “science” with political ideology). I do not think that Greg Laden, GrrlScientist (who is not doing any kind of science at all, these days), nor even Pharyngula (who is, nevertheless, the most adept writer and the most capable science writer of the three) should be featured on ScienceBlogs™. If the purpose is to share science with people, rabid leftist ranting and knee-jerk atheism is not the way to do it. That is the way to further marginalize scientists and science which only enables the attitude demonstrated by Senator McCain, for example, who was spewing nonsense about “bear DNA” all throughout his campaign.
By the way, I find that Pleiotropy serves as a good filter for reading Pharyngula.
Besides, the real scientists are busy working, writing, deriving, programming even, not making fun of Catholics.
