This is Mythusmage Opines, my blog for expressing my opinion on matters, and passing on news of neat and nifty things. How this new edition of Mythusmage Opines came about is a long and involved story involving my forgetfulness, and GoDaddy.com’s criminality. For GoDaddy is set up to fish for and net expired domains before the original owner can retrieve them. So at the moment Mythusmage.com has a bunch of ads on it, and is for sale by GoDaddy at $70.00.
Now GoDaddy is supposed to offer domains for about $2.00 a year, with hosting. So I expect GoDaddy thinks Mythusmage.com has some value above and beyond the typical domain. Which does compliment me, that my work has given my old domain some cachet in the blogging world.
But what a $70.00 price tag tells me is that GoDaddy expects me to shell out the money to get the domain back. That after 9 years with Mythusmage.com identifying website after blog with my work on it I’m ready to put out some serious money—but not too serious—to get it back. Don’t know about you, but in these here parts we call that sort of thing extortion. May be technically legal, but it’s still ethically shitty.
It isn’t just GoDaddy alone, my old web host, Total Choice Hosting (TCH), helped. I had Mythusmage.com back ordered with TCH. TCH was supposed to inform me when Mythusmage.com was available again. They never sent that notification. I never even had the chance to get Mythusmage.com back.
So I now have a new Mythusmage Opines at a new domain with a new host. Host Monster. Beyond the ease and speed of getting the new account and domain up and running, and all the features Host Monster offers (call that a plug and stifle yourself) what impressed me most is the fact Host Monster called me to verify my account. Called me, when an email would’ve sufficed and was what I expected. That is service.
So here is the new Mythusmage Opines, with a new domain at a new host. In the days to come there will be changes, more plugins, a new (old) theme, and shameless shilling for Host Monster. I hope you’ll return, read, and comment often, and lots of you too. See you again soon.
