Since I’m not really posting politics and neat stuff to this blog I’ve decided to post about roleplaying games, more specifically, about Dangerous Journeys: Mythus. That way I’ll get some writing practice in and I’ll be posting to this blog more regularly.
This post is about the dire and dangerous foes of the world of Ærth known as the Accursed. The Accursed are denizens of the lower planes, the nether planes, and are Ærth’s demons, devils, demodands, and supernatural vampires, among many other creatures.
The Accursed are, in a word evil. The Accursed are cruel, callous, uncaring, and selfish. They are concerned only with themselves, and in particular each demon or devil is concerned only with himself. They have feelings for none, nor any respect. Others are only to be used, unless the other is so powerful they must be catered to. And even then the demon is always searching for ways to use the other, if not betray them out right.
Now the bulk of the Accursed are no smarter than a mortal, but they have a certain native cunning which they use to great effect. The more powerful Accursed are subtle indeed, and will gleeful use, and abuse, mortals, using treachery and trickery to great effect.
One thing the Accursed know how to do is how to mislead those who would use them. For the Accursed take great joy in leading mortals on, and in giving mortals the false impression that the mortal is in control. When the accursed finally lays the hammer down the cries of disbelief and despair from the victim are as ambrosia to the fiend.
The Accursed are experts in making mortals believe that the demon actually cares for the fool, and may even play the game for mortal generations, until he feels the time has come for treason and the start of their awful games.
Please keep in mind that the Accursed don’t always make their evil obvious, though they can if they feel like it. Above all the Accursed are not always distorted or displeasing in appearance, for many Accursed can make themselves look pleasing, and a few are actually ineffable in appearance, of a delightful countenance. But, for those mortals perceptive and insightful, the Accursed practically always have a certain inner ugliness which makes them disagreeable, even disgusting, to those capable of discernment. That said, keep in mind that many mortals have a talent for self deception and take pleasure in fooling themselves, actively and eagerly denying their feelings, because they know that their friend would never do them wrong.
So let me reiterate, the Accursed are evil and take joy in using and abusing people. Mortals, their own kind, innocents of all sorts. They will corrupt where they can, destroy where they cannot, and live fat off the work of people under their command. All the while, at least the more subtle ones, leading their victims to believe that the Accursed actually cares for them and wishes them only the best.
So have pity on witches and sorcerers, for they are being played for fools, and purblind fools at that. But have respect for their abilities, for they are puissant foes indeed. And have respect for the Accursed, for they are most capable foes. But never think them capable of true friendship, for that they are utterly incapable of. Be cautious when dealing with demons and fiends and devils, and if you think you’ve gained advantage over one be sure that your testicles are missing and you now carry “kick me” tattooed to your back.
The Accursed, Ærth’s bane, dread them as you’ve dreaded nothing else.
